I get very nostalgic for little specialty shops, where the people are passionate about what they do. Spending time in Europe, I really enjoyed the local artisanal food shops, where you can visit that special little place that has the best cheeses, or the shop that only sells poultry. I kid you not, they actually have a store that has a mind blowing variety of chickens, chickens with white skin, yellow skin, French chickens, pheasant, ducks, wild game, you name it. So you can imagine being a lover of cheese, I was excited to stumble upon this little cheese shop on the Westside of town. Wheelhouse is a little cheese shop with a very knowledgeable and unpretentious friendly staff. They have a nice selection of about 75 – 100 carefully curated cheeses. They will give you a sample of any cheese, before purchasing it. Go ahead and ask them about any cheese, and they are happy to educate you about where it comes from, taste, storage, etc. The prices are in line or a little lower than Whole Foods prices, but from my experience, the quality is better. I went ahead and sampled and purchased some Manchego that was far superior to the Manchego I buy at Whole Foods. Without even asking, the cheese guy behind the counter, gave me a sample of the Manchegos that they carried, which made deciding on a cheese a whole lot easier. I left the store with some selections that we have truly enjoyed.
They also have a nice little heated patio in the back where they hold small events, wine and cheese tastings and a Movie night.
In addition to cheeses, Wheelhouse also carries a small selection of cured meats, crackers, jams, and other food related accoutrements. Oh yeah, and there’s wine, beer and ale to go along with that cheese.
